Incorporating literacy in classroom curriculum
Literature is found everywhere in my placement. The students are reading books on every subject as well as just for fun. For my social studies lesson, I read a book that helped solidify some of the concepts we were learning. I think it really added something special to the lesson overall; it helped the students be able to apply some of the terms learned in the lesson to examples found in the book. Like I've said in other posts, the students in my placement are always reading and this is how I want my future class to be run as well. I love the idea of reading a short book about a particular subject to get students in the zone and ready to learn. Sort of like the math book that Professor Oesterle showed us in class. I think that's a great book to have in ones classroom for students to pick up at anytime and enjoy. I just want to make sure that literature isn't just for the "language arts" portion of the class but is applied to all subjects throughout the day. I took a poetry class last semester and was introduced to the idea of reading a poem at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day. This is a good way just to incorporate multiples ways of exposing the students to literature.

I like that one of your goals is to make literature visible through all subjects throughout the day because that is also one of my goals. I think it is important for students to realize that literacy goes way beyond just the sectioned time block for it in class. I think it is also good to see from you classroom experience that you notice a lot of your students reading, which I wish I could say I saw in my classroom. It is just a good reminder that every school is different and it can be achieved, maybe my CT just has different preferences. I also completely agree with you on having literature for every subject, even to introduce subjects. I really like the idea of even having a short book that may cover a narrow or broad topic that is going to be covered just to keep the students on track.
ReplyDeleteI am also in a classroom that incorporates literature into all subjects. I think that this makes a huge difference in a students engagement and understanding of a lesson. My CT usually starts a lesson by reading a book that will introduce the students to new terms and ideas. She then usually closes her lessons with the reading of another book that tends to be more fun but that brings everything they learned together. My CT said that in her experiences the students tend to remember a lesson and become more engaged with it when it involves literature.
ReplyDeleteA question I have is, if you are going to incorporate literature into every subject, will you also have a time of the day set aside strictly for literature? An example I am thinking of is a program such as Drop Everything And Read.
